Final Project - Lens Based Image Making

1. Sports photography

Sports photography is achieved with a DSLR with high shutter speeds. Lenses are needed to go in closer or away to keep up fast enough with the sport going on.

2. Still Life

Still Life is where you photograph an object(s), 'depicting inanimate object matter'. Objects photographed are usually wine glasses, food, flowers and so on.

File:Apache-still-life.jpg

3. Landscape Photography

Landscape photography is pictures of various places around the world. Landscape photography mostly captures the feel and atmosphere. Places photographed include mountains, waterfalls, beaches, fields etc, all of which have no people included as the aim of landscape photography is to show off the natural environment.

4. Reportage/Journalistic

This is where the reporter is the photographer. They take pictures as things happen, like people standing around, walking by etc.

5. Macro

Macro photography is extreme close-up photography in which the size of the subject is bigger than life size. Macro enables small things like insects, snowflakes and other tiny objects. It is done by 35mm equivalent magnification.

6. Portraiture/Figurative

Portrait photography is obviously a photo of a portrait of a subject. The focus of the photo is often the persons face but can include some of their body as well as show the background.

7. Advertising/Commercial - fashion

Advertising/commercial is to sell something. They sometimes do it by using a model to show off the clothes or product.

8. Fine-art

Fine-art photography is getting a shot of a subject with good lighting and the best environment, apparently it 'depicts high quality and beauty'.

Final Project - Designs So Far

This was created on Photoshop with my tablet. I got the idea for this by wanting a grungy, sketchy design for one of my posters. After feedback, I got told to add a logo and change the colour of the fire and this was the result.

For this I had to do a far east market design so I did Japan. I like how I made the colour scheme red since it fits Japan very well. I also think the font with the sun behind was good. I got good feedback for the background going well with the poster. This may be my final design as I think it's the best one I made.

For this design, I got inspired by Matt Needle. I like how it has a kind of 'cyberpunk' look which I realised after making it. I wasn't sure about the font for the name of the band so I eventually changed it to the other logo.

For this design, I was looking through old pics I could use and found this, then after I simply did a hue/saturation to get the colour and then found a good enough font for the logo.

For this I was experimenting with all sorts of effects on Photoshop because I wanted to make something vibrant and mad, and eventually I made something which resembled an explosion (or paint splatter according to others but eithers good).

For this I got inspiration from a poster where it was one colour with plenty of pictures, typography, effects, etc used in the background. The first one I had the main subject completely green but after feedback, I was told it was be better if I changed it to white with an outline to contrast with the green.

For this poster, I wanted to create something completely different so I got the idea to make something look tribal. Also, I got an idea to add 'twins' since thats in the band name so I did two of those statues, and along with the font it came out how I wanted it to look for once. I made an alternate version because I was unsure of the colours, I got good feedback anyways.

Photography - Viewpoints

Single viewpoint of a chair

Multiple viewpoints

David Crook inspired

My own style - cloning

The plan for this was to get photos of different viewpoints including a single viewpoint, multiple viewpoints, David Crook inspired and our own style.

For this we had to take loads of pictures and put them into a piece inspired by viewpoints. Our first one was a single viewpoint of a chair, where we'd stand still and just move the camera around. We had to specifically do a chair to compare with other's work at the end, I think this is my favourite one because it was the one that came out best in my opinion. After that we had to do one of multiple viewpoints where we'd take pics of things from different angles. The next one was actually a David Crook inspired where we'd only take about 3 pics then cut them into strips where each pic would look slightly different. Our last one was a style of our choice so I did cloning, where my subject was cloned a number of times in the pic. I think I did well in this because I got good feedback for each pic, to improve I would have to practise more with the multiple viewpoints one because I found it slightly tricky, for the David Crook one I would choose a better subject and for the cloning one I would have to use the 'levitation technique' again.

Final Project - Form & Function and Information Graphics

The form of the poster is that it's going to be A3 or A4. The function of the poster is to have information for the gig, like the headlining band, the support bands, date, venue and ticket price.

What are Infographics?

Infographics are visual representations of data and knowledge aimed to show information quickly and as simple as possible. They can be used for anything but are mostly used for things like maps, architecture, statistics.

Photography - Beate Gutschow Inspired

Beate Gutschow is a German contemporary artist who is known for her landscape photography. Her work is known to be spaceous and include buildings, as well as be done in black & white. Her work looks really depressing because theres no people or natural objects around just dull buildings and space, it reminds me of a dystopia, the sort of place A Clockwork Orange would be set.

The plan for this is to take photos inspired by Beate Gutschow, where we have to take photos in depressing places. Equipment includes a Nikon DX, where I'll take the pics in black & white.

For this we had to take pics of depressing places in the style of Beate Gutschow in black & white, we were only limited to taking pics around college, so finding depressing places would be a bit of a challenge (whereas a block of flats would be ideal for this).

Final Project - Christie Goodwin

"If music is the soundtrack of your life then it is certain that at some point you have come across a picture of mine". Christie Goodwin has been photographing since 1976. She originally started in fashion photography but moved on to music photography. Christie mainly does official tour and album photography. Her work has been exhibited and she has also won awards.

My opinion of her work is that it's great because it's vibrant and full of energy, also I like the fact that she takes B&W as well as colour shots. Her work is good because she captures the atmosphere of the moment and it makes you feel like you're there. To achieve these shots she uses a Canon with available light.

Final Project - Todd Owyoung

Photos of KISS performing on The Tour at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis on August 27, 2012. (Todd Owyoung)

Rapper Lil Wayne performing at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 21, 2012. (Todd Owyoung)

Todd Owyoung is a freelance photographer who does live music photography, tour photography and band portraits. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and more.

My opinion of his work is that it's impressive because his pictures look exciting. It's good because his pics capture atmosphere, like for example the musicians rockin' out and the crowd enjoying themselves. Also another reason why his work is good is because the subject is shown as important and there's not usually much else in the pics besides some stage lights sometimes. He does his work with a Nikon and prefers to use available light to capture the look better.

Final Project - Nick Pickles

Nick Pickles is a freelance photographer to take photos of gigs and festivals. His clients include BBC, EMI, Red Bull and Disney. His big break came when BBC commissioned him to do T in the Park which was his start to covering most of the big festivals in the UK.

My opinion of his work is that it's great because it's vibrant and energetic. His work is good because he captures atmosphere, and makes the subject look important. Another reason why his work is good is because his portfolio includes some fantastic photos of performers on stage, for example a shot of the band from the side or behind, with a shot of the crowd and lights in the distance making them look incredible. To achieve these shots, he uses a camera, probably Nikon or Canon.

Web Design Project - Reflections

Studio equipment reflecting in the computer screen

Nikon DX
ISO: 800

The plan for this was to get photos with reflections in them. We got a list of things to take pictures of with reflection including water, metal, glass etc.

We took photos with reflections in them. I think they turned out well because I got good feedback. I was impressed with the puddle one because the tree reflection was done well in it but the double yellow lines  ruined it slightly. My favourite one was the metal one, because the photo was taken thrtough a fence and it looked bendy in the reflection of the wing mirror, which gave it a surreal look.

Final Project - Hidden Moves

Hidden Moves is the alias of artist and designer Rhys Owen.

My opinion of his work is that I like it because it's got a grungy feel, and it looks cool and urban and also like it because it's humourous with the animal heads. He uses muted tones and a lot of black & white. His work is good because it's modern and edgy. His work is created a mixture of traditional & digital techniques.

Final Project - Jermaine Rogers

Radiohead by Jermaine Rogers

Ween by Jermaine Rogers

Jermaine Rogers is an artist and designer, and makes modern rock poster art. Since 1995 he has designed for Radiohead, Tool, Deftones, David Bowie, Morrissey, The Cure, Mars Volta, Public Enemy, Them Crooked Vultures, Ween and hundreds of others.

My opinion of his work is that it's impressive because I really like the style of drawing. It's good because the artwork is very detailed, sometimes the drawings look realistic with the shading done well and other things have use of block colour. Another reason why his work is good is because of the use of eye-catching typography. His technique is illustration.
